A new role for the South Melbourne Town Hall
The South Melbourne Town Hall will undergo a major refurbishment in preparation for its new life as the centerpiece of the Emerald Hill / South Melbourne Community Hub.
The entire ground floor of the west wing of the South Melbourne Town Hall will be devoted to spaces for community use as part of the refurbishment. The same amount of community activity space will be available as was first identified in 2005 - ensuring the requirements originally identified by a community reference panel will be fully accessible to all the community. A number of community groups have already indicated a desire to locate their administration base in the hub. Allocation of this office space will follow once the floor plans have been finalised.
The $2M refurbishment is expected to commence in early 2008, after existing staff based in the South Melbourne Town Hall move into the redeveloped St Kilda Town Hall.
ASSIST and local community services will be based at 222 Bank Street, South Melbourne while work is underway.
