South Melb Town Hall Precinct & Community Hub: A New Role Printer friendly Email to a friend   Rate this page

South Melbourne Town Hall

South Melbourne Town Hall 1930

A new role for the South Melbourne Town Hall

The South Melbourne Town Hall will undergo a major refurbishment in preparation for its new life as the centerpiece of the Emerald Hill / South Melbourne Community Hub.

The entire ground floor of the west wing of the South Melbourne Town Hall will be devoted to spaces for community use as part of the refurbishment. The same amount of community activity space will be available as was first identified in 2005 - ensuring the requirements originally identified by a community reference panel will be fully accessible to all the community.  A number of community groups have already indicated a desire to locate their administration base in the hub. Allocation of this office space will follow once the floor plans have been finalised.

The $2M refurbishment is expected to commence in early 2008, after existing staff based in the South Melbourne Town Hall move into the redeveloped St Kilda Town Hall.

ASSIST and local community services will be based at 222 Bank Street, South Melbourne while work is underway.

August - October 2008

Lease of vacant space on the 1st floor of South Melbourne Town Hall

Council resolved in July 2007 to offer the Australian National Academy of Music (ANAM) 'first right of refusal' for the vacant lettable space on the 1st floor, subject to commercial terms and conditions satisfactory to the Council. The offer was to be taken up by 30 June 2008 or it would lapse.

A letter from ANAM was received by the Council on 25 June 2008 advising that they would not be taking up the offer.

Council resolved to leave the vacant space on the first floor of the South Melbourne Town Hall not required for community hub or council purposes within the following parameters:

  • for a term not extending 2 years
  • with a not for profit organisation
  • on commercial terms based on an independent market value (currently valued at $145 per square metre or estimated total of $58,000 per annum or at a rebated rate if beneficial outcomes for the Port Phillip community can be demonstrated
  • consistent with heritage, land use planning and South Melbourne Central Structure Plan principles.

Council reolved to endorse the allocation of administrative space at the South Melbourne Town Hall to the Boon Wurrung Foundation, Sputnik TV, Port Phillip Life Activities Club, Save Albert Park, Friends of the ABC and Port Phillip Citizens for Reconciliation.
