St Kilda Botanical Gardens Gates
St Kilda Botanical Gardens celebrated its 150th year in 2010. To mark the occasion City of Port Phillip commissioned four new gates which are now an integral part of the gardens welcoming visitors and introducing the living plant collection.
Council has commissioned a fifth and final gate for the corner of Blessington and Herbert Streets next to the Eco Centre. David Wood of Bent Metal will design and manufacture the fifth gate as he has done for the existing four gates now installed.
David’s gate designs are inspired by Victorian era garden aesthetics, particularly arabesque influences, grottos and arbors. They also draw from the Edwardian, Deco and modern Streetscape of the local area. They explore the scientific, conservation, educational and recreational functionality of a botanic garden.
The fifth gate will focus on the social and humanistic sciences, referencing the myriad of characters that use the gardens making it a rich and vibrant place. Motifs such as a stiletto, a back pack, a dog collar, a painter’s palette will feature reflecting the essence distinctive to the St Kilda Botanic gardens.
All of the gates have realised the vision of developing a dialogue between the public and the gardens, about its stories told, untold and forgotten.
Design work is underway and installation is scheduled for June 2012.
