United Nations Day marks adoption of City of Port Phillip Social Justice CharterAs the United Nations Flag flew outside the St Kilda Town Hall on the 24th October 2011 it seemed fitting that inside Council was adopting its first Social Justice Charter. The Social Justice Charter will help guide Council decision making and provide a framework for working in partnership with the local community to achieve social justice. Mayor Cr Rachel Powning says that "Council's development of the Social Justice Charter is evidence of our strong commitment to the common good, whilst also recognising the important individual human rights that all members of our community have". The Mayor also said "The Charter will be used as a reference point in our policy and decision making processes, and will be applied as far as possible to all areas of Council's work to ensure that social justice is promoted through all our activities" The Charter is based on six principles:
The Social Justice Charter has been developed with input from the wider community, Port Phillip Councillors, Council staff, and local CEO's and staff of community organisations. It was offically launched on International Human Rights Day, Saturday 10 December 2011 at O'Donnell Gardens in St Kilda. Read the Social Justice Charter.
