South Melbourne Central - between the City and the Lake.

Background reports

At its meeting on August 25 2003, the Port Phillip Council resolved to make available the two consultant reports that were prepared as background documents for the South Melbourne Central Planning Forum (held between the 16-21 July 2003).  The independent consultant reports have also informed the development of a Draft Structure Plan for South Melbourne Central.

South Melbourne Central Retail Analysis (Patrick Partners) July 2003

This study looks at the long term retail future of the South Melbourne activity centre, based around Clarendon Street, Coventry Street and the South Melbourne Market. It discusses the functional role of the centre, its market position and the values it represents. In particular it considers a broader role for the centre, recognising its current characteristics and discusses the potential for additional supermarkets in the precinct and what the impacts of this might be.

This study considers the economic and employment roles of the precinct and provides expert advice about the current and potential role of the precinct. It outlines and evaluates three different planning scenarios for the precinct and discusses what these might mean for the future of South Melbourne Central.
