Area: DescriptionSouth Melbourne, between the south bank of the Yarra River and Port Phillip Bay, originated at the elevated area first known as Emerald Hill, two kilometres south of Melbourne. The South Melbourne neighbourhood is bounded by the West Gate Freeway to the north; Kingsway to the east, Albert Road, Albert Park reserve, Ferrars Street, Bevan Street and St Vincent St to the south; and Pickles Street and Boundary Street to the west. CharacteristicsSouth Melbourne is one of the oldest neighbourhoods within the City of Port Phillip. The housing stock dates primarily from the Victorian era with a significant stock of high rise public housing from the 1960s and 1970s. The neighbourhood also contains a substantial office, industrial and warehouse component. The neighbourhood is well served by the main South Melbourne shopping area in Clarendon Street, several tramlines and the St Kilda light rail line.
