Launch
Over 200 people kicked up their heels on Wednesday (1/10) at the Grand Tea Dance and Cabaret to launch the 2008 Seniors' Festival in the City of Port Phillip. During the next couple of weeks the festival promises a huge range of events that will entertain both young and old.

The Growing Older Outrageously Forum
2-4pm Wednesday 15/10, St Kilda Town Hall
Three dynamic older citizens: Father Bob Maguire, the Parish Priest of South Melbourne's St Peter and Paul Parish and a much-in-demand speaker and commentator, Maria Starcevic, local indigenous elder and a driving force behind Our Rainbow Place and fashionista Sally Browne, a fashion designer since her teens. Also growing old disgracefully is Alan Hopgood who'll talk about his 50 years in the theatre at the U3A event (2.30pm Saturday 18/10, Mary Kehoe Centre). East St Kilda resident Julia Blake, another star of stage and screen, will present the seniors' writing competition awards, Port Phillip Through My Eyes (2-4pm Sunday 19/10, St Kilda Library).
This year fourteen community organisations applied to the council's $5000 grants program to run Seniors Festival events. “As a result, the Seniors' Festival has different events and a different shape to previous years. There's a talent competition, a plant auction, concerts, a barbecue for older gay men, a quiz, and an art exhibition. What hasn't changed, of course, is the mission to encourage people to get out and about, meet new people and have fun,” Cr Cribbes said.
This year the community ball has been scheduled to coincide with the Seniors' Festival. Glam up for the ball at South Melbourne Town Hall from 6-9pm Thursday October 16.
