SecondBite collects fresh produce from the South Melbourne Market and delivers it to charity organisations in the City of Port Phillip.
Each Sunday afternoon between 450 and 500 kilos of surplus fresh fruit and vegetables, meat, seafood and deli items are collected from stallholders at South Melbourne. Food is delivered to the Sacred Heart Mission, Port Phillip Community Group, St Kilda Parish Mission - Drop-in Centre, Inner South Community Health Service, St Kilda Youth Service and the Salvation Army St Kilda Crisis Services.
SecondBite concentrates on fresh food which is then used in the kitchens of other charities to prepare or supplement meals.
SecondBite now has two employees but otherwise relies on volunteers and donations. It currently distributes food to over 25 different agencies. To date SecondBite has collected enough surplus food to provide more 200,000 meals.
