The SSAY forum was enlightening and filled with dialogue. In October 2004, the City of Port Phillip's Gay Lesbian Bisexual Transgender Intersex (GLBTI) Advisory Committee held a forum at the St Kilda Town Hall on the issues and needs of same-sex attracted youth (SSAY). Such an event was seen by the City of Port Phillip Council and the GLBTI Advisory Committee as being the first step in raising the profile of SSAY in our community.

A presentation was given by Mark Camilleri on 4 minutes download via 56K modemSupporting SSAY in CoPP.

Research into Services for Same Sex Attracted Young People in the City of Port Phillip

The current SSAYP project is a response to recommendations from the City of Port Phillip 2004 SSAYP forum and previous research. Both of these initiatives have highlighted the necessity for SSAYP friendly services within all councils and municipalities. Recommendations from the 2004 forum included requests to address the following areas of concern for SSAYP:

  • School Education
  • Cultural development
  • SSAYP dedicated workers specifically support, promotion, advocacy, education
  • Safe places for meeting that are inclusive of all kinds of sexual orientation
  • Communication via Internet, groups, magazines, more forums.

The primary objectives of this project were to:

  • Investigate current services within the City of Port Phillip by exploring their availability and utilisation.
  • Provide a set or recommendations to help increase service utilisation.
