Stormwater
All stormwater in the City of Port Phillip travels via a system of entry pits in streets into the storm water network of underground pipes and flows out to Port Phillip Bay. Council provides a Stormwater Service to its community in order to protect property from damage against flooding and to provide safe and healthy living environment in a planned, efficient and effective manner.
The goals of an effectively managed drainage system is to preserve and enhance the built environment through excellent planning, design and maintenance and provide a long term plan for the effective and sustainable management of the drainage system.
Blocked pits and drains
There are more than 1200 drainage pits in the Council including 20 Litre traps. Pits are inspected and cleaned twice yearly. A suction machine is used to remove silt and rubbish from the pits. Drains are cleaned and cleared of debris to allow for passage of storm water. In addition to regular cleaning of pits, Council has also installed a large number of litter traps on the drainage system to collect rubbish washed away with flows. Traps are made of steel or plastic baskets that are fitted to stormwater pits. These are cost effective methods of collecting organic and inorganic litter. Some of these traps collect between 1 and 5 tonnes of rubbish over two or three months period.
