Recycling is of major importance to the City of Port Phillip and we are committed to reducing the amount of waste going to landfill.

Port Phillip residents are avid recyclers. Some 9000 tonnes of wastepaper and containers are recycled each year - about 33 per cent of all household waste generated.

A critical part of the recycling process is maintaining the quality of the collections.

The City of Port Phillip and Planet Ark urge all Australians to be a sport and recycle their Christmas Cards 4 Planet Ark. From Boxing Day till the end of January, simply take your unwanted Christmas, birthday and other greeting cards and envelopes to most Coles Supermarkets and put them in the Planet Ark recycling bins. You can also pick up a free postage-paid recycling envelope from participating Australia Post outlets, while stocks last. Just put your cards inside this envelope and post them free at any post box. One million Australia Post/Planet Ark recycling envelopes have been produced for this year's campaign. The greeting cards are then made into new packaging or 'SAFE' toilet tissue. This recycling process saves trees and dramatically reduces waste, giving the environment a very happy New Year.

This is the fourth edition of the Waste Wise Shopping Guide. Through this guide we encourage you to make informed purchasing decisions that will benefit the environment through reducing demand for new materials, reusing products and supporting the recycling of valuable  materials that would otherwise go to landfill.

Materials you put out at the kerb for collection, or leave at transfer stations are not truly recycled until they are reprocessed into new products and re-purchased.

No Changes to Other Collection Days

Your recycling will be collected using a bin supplied by the City of Port Phillip, from the street outside your house every week. Place your bin out before 6:00am or the night before your collection day. Return your container inside your property following collection.

• Gable-top and long-life milk & juice cartons
• Aluminium, steel cans, aerosols and clean foil
• Paper and Cardboard (non-waxed type only)

Collection times can vary. Recycling can be collected up to 6pm on your collection day. If your recycling container is missed, please contact ASSIST on (03) 9209 6777, TTy (03) 9209 6713 or use eServices. We will arrange for the recycling bin to be emptied within 24 hours.

New recycling bin

Council will deliver a recycling bin if you are moving into a newly constructed building. Please contact ASSIST on (03) 9209 6777 or use eServices to request a new bin.

The City of Port Phillip can arrange delivery of a replacement bin if your bin is missing or you move to an existing residence where there is no bin. An application form and statutory declaration must be complete. Fill in the attached Garbage/recycling bin application form Sept2006 and mail it to City of Port Phillip Private Bag 3 St Kilda 3182 or take it to the Port Phillip Transfer Station. Do you have a 'No Junk Mail' or 'No Advertising Material' sign on your letterbox and still receive unwanted Junk Mail? You can do something about it.
