The free annual Port Phillip youth festival kicks off on Friday 11 December with the launch of City of Port Phillip Kools CD. Young bands from around the municipality got together to record the impressive compilation of original music at Studio 52 in Collingwood earlier this year.
This event is organised and run by young people from Kombiz Youth Network based in South Melbourne and Kool Skool artists will be performing on the day ,along with Local Port Melbourne band October Powder.
“The festival is a fantastic way to engage a diverse range of school aged young people from across the City,” said Mayor Cr Frank O’Connor.
“Young artists highlight the unique aspects of youth culture in our community and events like this help young musicians develop their craft. It’s also a great opportunity for the young people involved in running the festival to enhance their creative and technical skills through experience and training in event management,” he said.
Everyone is welcome to come along and enjoy the music and activities on the day which include sports provided by Police and Community Youth Clubs (PCYC), YMCA, free food courtesy of Heat Program and much more.
Previous years have included Distortion @ the Green, Southside Rize Youth Festival @ Park Towers, and the Under, Under, Over Festival @ Graham Street Skate Park. The event has been extremely successful with average attendance of 400 people.
A number of key services within the municipality have collaborated to produce the event including the KOMBIZ Youth Network, Inner South Community Health Services who part fund the festival, Ardoch Youth Foundation, St Lukes, St Kilda PCYC, Victoria Police, Kool Skools and the Heat Program. Elwood College supports this event with a number of the bands coming from the school.
This is a State Government Sponsored Freeza Event, alcohol drug and smoke-free fully supervised event and is one of five Freeza events that take place during the year.
