Sustainability is one of the fifteen Guiding Principles in IMAP and has been applied across all the issues addressed in IMAP.

IMAP Strategy 9 seeks to substantially improve the environmental performance of the Inner Melbourne Region.

Action 9.1: 'Establish common greenhouse emissions, water and waste targets and programs for the Inner Melbourne Region', established under Strategy 9, seeks to encourage and facilitate a consistent regional approach to achieving sustainability. It will do this by establishing benchmarks and defining a set of regional targets for future monitoring of regional progress towards overall environmental sustainability.

Key Issues

Each IMAP partner currently addresses and monitors sustainability in a variety of ways and has varying targets to measure achievement. Data availability and collection currently varies across municipal, state and national levels. A key objective of the project is to consider and standardise data availability and collection, as required, to ensure a solid base for both benchmarking and monitoring actions and change to ensure regional progress towards sustainability.
