What is the Inner Melbourne Action Plan?

The Inner Melbourne Action Plan (IMAP) is an agreed plan of actions by Melbourne's inner regional Councils, including: Port Phillip, Yarra, Melbourne and Stonnington (west of Kooyong Road) with the objective of 'Making Melbourne more liveable'.

It will do this by pursuing over 50 actions across 11 strategies. One action in the plan is to investigate the options and identify water efficiency opportunities to reduce the use of potable (drinking) water on open space and where possible, replace it with alternate water supplies e.g recycled water

What is it doing about water use on our parks?

Parklands and active recreation facilities are central to the liveability of the Inner Melbourne Region, but water use in these areas is not always sustainable, especially in this time of drought. Finding alternative sources of water and minimising the use of potable water on our open space will contribute to the overall sustainability of Melbourne while ensuring the future of a key component of its liveability.

IMAP Councils have individually investigated the alternative sources to potable water, although each is at different stages of investigation and expertise. IMAP has engaged a consultant (SKM) to investigate what opportunities there may be, in each municipality, to reduce the amount of potable (i.e. drinking) water used on 20 parks across the region.

The benefits of this research may include efficiencies in development of various water saving or replacement schemes, sharing of reduction and recycling techniques and also the engagement and education of various partners in improved water saving techniques and new opportunites.
