RAG Theatre are an award winning ensemble of performers who create group devised theatre based on the cast's experience of mental illness. 

Founded in 1993, the RAG Theatre is supported by the City of Port Phillip as part of a commitment to creating arts opportunities for people who experience mental illness.

RAG Theatre are now recruiting

If you have a desire to perform as part of a theatre ensemble and have an experience of the mental health system, RAG Theatre may be for you. RAG Theatre meets each Wednesday from 1pm - 3.30pm at the South Melbourne Community Centre. In 2008 RAG Theatre Artistic Director is Martin White.

Past Events

Crisis & Rhapsody

Part of the 2007 Melbourne Fringe Festival, Crisis & Rhapsody, played to full houses at Theatreworks. A collaboration with SPARC Theatre (SPARC is inclusive of people who live in supported accommodation, and supported by the City of Port Phillip and arbias Ltd), Crisis & Rhapsody took out the inaugural Fringe Festival Community Cultural Development Award. Crisis & Rhapsody was directed by Nilgun Guven.

SPARCS Fly & Object Zen

In 2006 RAG Theatre performed in a double bill with SPARC Theatre called SPARCS Fly Object Zen. This work premiered at Theatreworks in October for Mental Health Week 2006 and the 2006 Melbourne Fringe Festival. The double bill featured work by SPARC Theatre a company of performers who live with acquired brain injury, supported by arbias, and RAG Theatre.

RAG Theatre's productions include Looking for Da Da (1993 & 1995), The Reluctant Doctor (1996), Catapult (1997), Crazy About You (1998 & 1999), Mad House (2000 & 2002), In the Room (2003), A Day in Bed (2004) and Twas the Night Before Xmas ...in St Kilda (2003 & 2004). Whispering RAG was  performed at Theatreworks as part of Mental Health Week 2005. RAG Theatre released a documentary Theatre of Hope and education kit Hearing Other Voices in 1999.  Recent screenings of the documentary include The Other Film Festival in December 2004.

Tours

In 2003, the RAG Theatre Troupe travelled to Canada to collaborate with Billedspor (Denmark) and Workman Theatre Project (Canada) to create a new work In the Room for the inaugural Madness and Arts World Festival.  RAG on Tour in 1995 involved performances throughout regional Victoria.

Awards

 2007 Melbourne Finge Festival Inaugural Community Cultural Development Award.

Eli Lilly Partnerships in Wellbeing Award in 2003.
