How did SWEEP come about?

Due to water restrictions over the last ten or so years, only some of the ovals have been irrigated using potable water. Bayside and Port Phillip Councils saw an opportunity to significantly improve water availability by harvesting stormwater from the Elster Creek Canal to replace the potable water and provide water for the other non-irrigated areas in the parks, trees and the Elsternwick Park Public Golf Course.

This project along with numerous others across sixteen eastern and south eastern Councils, received funding through a Stormwater Harvesting (WaSSH) grant application.  The grant is a part of the Federal Government's $200 million call for Stormwater Harvesting Projects under the National Urban Water and Desalination Plan. Under this plan a total of twenty-one water conserving projects have been initiated and are estimated to collectively save over 500 million litres of water annually.

Stormwater will be harvested from Elster Creek for treatment and storage in the existing lake in Elsternwick Park, and then distributed to the various sporting facilities located in both parks. This will provide 100 million litres per year of treated water and create a more attractive and inviting environment for sporting and recreational uses.

How will SWEEP impact on Elwood Park?

There will be minimal visual impact in Elwood Park. Water will be piped from Elsternwick park underground to distribution points within the park and along the Elwood foreshore. Port Phillip Council is upgrading the irrigation within the ovals at Elwood Park as part of its contribution to the overall project. The new irrigation system, holding tank and pump will ensure the system is efficient and sustainable in delivering water to Elwood Park and Elwood foreshore.

The SWEEP project will benefit the local environment and broader community by reducing potable water use and improving the playability of sporting facilities. It will create a more attractive and inviting environment, encouraging greater participation and use of these facilities.
