Princes Pier Refurbishment Printer friendly Email to a friend   Rate this page

Princes Pier in Port Melbourne is being refurbished, with the Bracks Government committing an estimated $14 million to the project.

The Pier represents an important part of Victoria's heritage - particularly our wartime and immigration histories.

It was a departure point for the Australian troops during the first and second World Wars and the first place of contact for thousands of post-War migrants.

The refurbishment will see the first 196 metres of the Pier fully restored.  Beyond that the decking will be removed, with the original pylons being preserved.  The end result will be a multipurpose waterfront venue.

In addition, the majority of the piles from the demolished section will be retained as a heritage and sculptural centrepiece.

Restoration of the remain Pier deck will include the replacement of defective timber piles and supports, and a new concrete deck.

The plans have been developed in consultation with the Beacon Cove Precinct Committee comprised of representatives from the State Government, City of Port Phillip, Heritage Victoria and local residents.

A contract has now been awarded to Fitzgerald Constructions Australia Pty Ltd for demolition of parts of the Pier with work to commence late in July and site shed to be erected later this week.  Final demolition drawings and specifications have been approved by Heritage Victoria.

The erection of the site sheds will involve blocking off a section of the pedestrian footpath, meaning pedestrian and cyclists will have to share a section of footpath for approximately 60 metres adjacent to the Pier area.

This area will be fenced off for safety, ensuring the construction site is separated from the public domain.

During the next few months you can expect to see cranes and barges on or around the site and demolition activity with an aim of also keeping disruption to a minimum.

While the demolition works are occurring the design team will focus on finalising the details of the new Northern deck.  The project is on track to be completed by the end of 2009.

We will endeavour to provide regular updates through Beacon Cove residents' association newsletter and via Council's newsletter.
