Port Melbourne waterfront serves as a major gateway to Melbourne for passenger ferries, cruise shipping and also trade with Tasmania. It is a major feature of Port Melbourne and one of the key urban waterfronts in Melbourne.
The Beacon Cove Precinct Committee was established by the Minister for Planning, to investigate options for public realm improvements to the wider Port Melbourne waterfront including urban design outcomes for the resolution of Princes Pier. This report presents the investigations of the Committee and provides a recommended framework for the Port Melbourne waterfront in terms of urban design improvements and appropriate waterfront uses.
The study area extends along the waterfront from Bay Street to the commencement of Sandridge Beach (the western edge of Stage 8 Beacon Cove development). The precinct from Bay Street to Sandridge Beach is a stretch of foreshore that engages people in many ways including leisure, recreation, gathering and travel and all forms of movement including pedestrian, bicycle, blading, boating and vehicle and service traffic.
This linear precinct contains five important public spaces:
- Princes Pier
- Waterfront Place
- The Foreshore Promenade
- Beach Street
- Beach Street and Bay Street intersection
