The Elwood Canal waterway now has a comprehensive management plan for its future.

The open space around the Elwood Canal is an essential green wedge within the City of Port Phillip.

Hewison Reserve is beautiful by day.

Hewison Reserve is beautiful by night.

With the new improved lighting you can enjoy Hewison Reserve by day or night.

The council has received two awards in the Australian Institute of Landscape Architects annual awards (Victoria and Tasmania region) for the Elwood Canal Management Plan and Hewison Reserve project.

Both of these award-winning projects were up against a host of other multi-million and smaller-scale projects, including Federation Square, Birrarung Marr and the Shrine of Remembrance.

The awards aims to foster recognition of the profession of landscape architecture, encourage excellence and provide public acknowledgement of the valuable contributions made by the profession to the improvement of our natural and built environments.

Elwood Canal Management Plan

The Elwood Canal Management Plan won a commendation award in the management category of 'Landscape Management'.

Three years ago the Elwood Canal Master Plan for this project was modified to focus on open space management. Heather McNutt and Helen Bainbridge from the parks and open space unit, with the landscape designers, Rush Wright and Associates, worked in conjunction with Port Phillip residents, canal patrons and Melbourne Water on the development of the management plan.

The result was a comprehensive management plan for the area with strong community support. Works on the ground include garden bed upgrades and furniture installation, resulting in visual improvement to the Elwood Canal open space area.

Hewison Reserve

Hewison Reserve in East St Kilda won a merit award in the design category of 'Public Open Space and Recreational Facilities'.

Hewison Reserve is a community reserve that was in urgent need of an upgrade. A detailed consultation process undertaken over 12 months allowed a diverse range of locals users to provide input into how they wanted their park to look and feel.

Through the work of Adam Nitschke and Helen Bainbridge from the council's parks and open space unit and Rush Wright and Associates, this local icon now caters for a multitude of users for play and passive recreation. The reserve also features drought tolerant vegetation.

At night the feature lighting highlighting blue, silhouetted trees has a striking effect, ensuring Hewison Reserve's landmark status in the East Kilda landscape.
