Operating more sustainably can involve:
- actively trying to reduce energy use in order to minimise greenhouse gas emissions
- having good waste management practises- attempting to reduce, reuse and recycle wherever possible
- encouraging customers to produce less waste (eg by not giving out plastic bags or giving discounts to customers who bring their own coffee cups)
- using water responsibly, especially in these times of drought (eg having a rain water tank, installing flow restrictors on taps or a dual flush toilet, using a high pressure water cleaner instead of a hose)
- protecting Port Phillip Bay by cleaning up rubbish outside your premises and preventing it from entering the stormwater system
- preventing rubbish and organics from entering the sewerage system by having a grease trap, sink strainers and sanitary bins
- selling environmentally friendly products (eg organic food, items made from recycled contents) or offering environmentally friendly services (eg sustainable building design)
- reducing car use and using alternatives such as walking, riding or catching public transport
- having a 'green' purchasing policy (ie purchasing recycled toilet paper and office paper)
- having an environmental and/or social policy that sets out how your organisation is working towards sustainability
- having an Environmental Management System (EMS) to see how you can improve your environmental management in simple, cost-effective ways
