New Year's Eve this year in the City of Port Phillip will be a low key affair.  Visitors are reminded that fireworks or other activities are not planned for this year. For any further information please see links below.

Local Laws

All licensees must have regard to any relevant conditions on related planning permits. This includes following normal kerbside trading conditions, including permit hours.

No alcohol to be consumed in public places on the foreshore or in open spaces. This will start from 30 December at 8pm, until 9am 1st January – Penalties will apply.

Only plastic containers to be used for kerbside trading throughout the entire day on the 31 December.

Planning / Building

Businesses will need to apply for citing approval for any marquees for more than 100 square meters, temporary structures and seating that you may be having for the day. Contact Building Department Steven Hanson at CoPP on 9209 6777.

Parks and Open Space

The city will have contractors available on New Year's Day to clean up all foreshore sites.

Night Rider services run every 30 min through the City of Port Phillip

  • Route 970 Via St Kidla, to City & Frankston/Rosebud

  • Route 980 Via St Kilda, to City & Dandenong

  • Route 944 Via Sth Melbourne to Werribee


40km speed limit will be implemented at Beaconsfield Pde – Marine Pde between Cowderoy and Blessington Streets, St Kilda. From 31 December, 12 Noon until Friday 1 January 2010, 12 Noon .

Route 3a (Swanston St to East Malvern via Luna Park)
• Services will operate all night with increased frequencies
• Services will operate via Luna Park
• Trams from East Malvern will terminate in St Kilda Road at City Road between 19:30 and 26:00
• 1800 – 22:00 operates to a 10 minute frequency
• 22:00 – 24:15 operates to a 8 minute frequency
• 24:15 – 25:15 operates to a 5 minute frequency
• 25:15 – 26:00 operates to a 10 minute frequency
• From 26:00 until the normal first service on New Years Day a 30 minute frequency will operate

Route 16 (Swanston Street to Kew Cotham Road via Luna Park)
• Services will operate all night with increased frequencies
• Trams from Kew Cotham Road will terminate in St Kilda Road at City Road between 19:30 and 26:00
• Between 18:00 and 26:00 every second tram will terminate at Dandenong & Hawthorn Roads (with trips beyond this point matching the normal Saturday timetable)
• From 02:00 all trips will operate to Kew Cotham Road
• 1800 – 22:00 operates to a 10 minute frequency
• 22:00 – 24:15 operates to a 8 minute frequency
• 24:15 – 01:15 operates to a 5 minute frequency
• 01:15 – 04:00 operates to a 10 minute frequency
• From 04:00 until the normal first service on New Years Day a 30 minute frequency will operate

Route 78/9 (North Richmond to Prahran – Chapel Street)
• Services will operate all night as route 78 (will not operate to Luna Park)
• From 18:00 until 01:30 a 10 minute frequency will operate
• From 01:30 until the normal first service on New Years Day a 30 minute frequency will operate

Route 96 (East Brunswick to St Kilda Beach via Bourke Street)
• Services will operate all night with increased frequencies
• 1800 – 22:00 operates to a 10 minute frequency
• 22:00 – 24:15 operates to a 8 minute frequency
• 24:15 – 01:15 operates to a 5 minute frequency
• 01:15 – 02:00 operates to a 10 minute frequency
• From 04:00 until the normal first service on New Years Day a 30 minute frequency will operate

Route 112 (West Preston to St Kilda-Fitzroy Street via Collins Street)
• Services will operate all night with increased frequencies
• 1800 – 22:00 operates to a 10 minute frequency
• 22:00 – 24:15 operates to a 8 minute frequency
• 24:15 – 01:15 operates to a 5 minute frequency
• 01:15 – 02:00 operates to a 10 minute frequency
• From 02:00 until the normal first service on New Years Day a 30 minute frequency will operate
