Timor Leste Exhibition

A major exhibition of over 40 hand-woven textiles (tais, pronounced tie-ss) from Timor-Leste (East Timor) will open at St Kilda Town Hall on September 3, running to the end of the month. Most designs are traditional but the exhibition also includes woven St Kilda Football Club scarves.

Dr Sara Niner, has helped curate the exhibition and says that the hand-woven textiles produced by East Timorese women are vital part of their culture, especially after decades of destructive conflict.

"It's mostly poor rural women, including many widows, who make up the bulk of the weavers. Selling tais is the only way many of these often vulnerable women can make cash money to pay for essential items," she said.

Tais are used for cultural and ritual exchange, worn as costumes and, in recent times, have been offered for sale. It is estimated that East Timorese women produce 30,000 textile pieces a year with a value of around USD$600,000.

The exhbition can be seen at The Gallery, St Kilda Town Hall, corner Brighton Road and Carlisle Street. To September 30. Monday-Friday, 9-5.

Revamped children's centre bigger, better, brighter

Ada Mary a Beckett Children's Centre, 7 Cumberland Road, Port Melbourne

Green and blue should never be seen, the old saying goes, but the unusual combination of lime green and dark blue has proved a winner at the new $1.6 million expansion of the Ada Mary a Beckett Children's Centre in Port Melbourne.

There are now four new rooms, offering 15 places each, two refurbished rooms, one 15 place infants' room with a separate sleep room and a 30 place preschool room. The children's spaces are fully air-conditioned and fitted out with new wooden furniture.

The centre also has a foyer for the first time, new toilets and bathroom, a modern kitchen three times the size of the old one, a parents' library, administration offices, a staff planning room and a staff lounge. Workers now have their own table and chairs outside to enjoy the fresh air. Two large new water tanks keep the new garden flourishing. The on-site office for visiting maternal and child health nurses has had a makeover, too. A new paved car park with 21 spaces caters for both staff and parents.

The Ada Mary a Beckett Children's Centre is one of eight community-run child care centres which receive financial support from the council.
