Summer Litter Blitz - working together, because litter has no boundaries
The City of Port Phillip, Hobsons Bay City Council and City of Yarra are teaming up to get cigarette butt litter off the streets and out of Port Phillip Bay through the Summer Litter Blitz campaign.
The campaign will run from November to December 2007 and February to May 2008 and will target litter bugs leaving cigarette butts on the ground. The blitz aims to improve the quality of local waterways in the three municipalities where cigarette butt litter causes significant environmental damage.
Through the program, the Councils will implement a five phase process in an attempt to eradicate litter from nominated hot spots in each municipality. The five stages include:
- Benchmarking
- Promotion
- Education
- Enforcement
- Evaluation
During the two week education stage, Council appointed butt champions will hand out personal ashtrays and reward those people disposing of litter correctly. Litter bugs will be warned about applicable fines.

Stage One of the Promenade launched
Stage one of the St Kilda foreshore's $7.7M facelift is open at the St Kilda Sea Baths, in time for summer and the holiday season.
The new boardwalk in front of the St Kilda Sea Baths is the first section to be completed. It will eventually run between the entry to the triangle site and St Kilda Pier. The timber fringe adjacent to the St Kilda Sea Baths - giving St Kilda Beach its edge - is open for people to enjoy Melbourne's iconic beach.
To celebrate the opening of stage one, the City of Port Phillip and the St Kilda Sea Baths hosted an official launch on Wednesday 14 November 2007.
