Second community bus hits the road

A second free community bus hits the road on Monday June 2, courtesy of the City of Port Phillip. It's the first time that a free transport service has connected up the opposite ends of the municipality, Port Melbourne and St Kilda.

For nearly twenty years, the council has operated a community bus across the neighbourhoods of St Kilda, St Kilda East and Elwood. Riding on this success, the service will now run throughout the municipality, incorporating Albert/Middle Park, South Melbourne and Port Melbourne in the service.

The St Kilda Town Hall and South Melbourne Market are major interchanges for the service, allowing passengers to access the north or south of Port Phillip with only one change.

Port Phillip Marks 10 Years of Saying Sorry

Supporters of reconciliation in the City of Port Phillip will celebrate this year's Sorry Day with two events:

  • A free lunch organised by Port Phillip Citizens for Reconciliation and Our Rainbow Place on Saturday May 24, 12.30-2.00pm at the South Melbourne Community Centre, cnr Park Street & Ferrars Place.
  • A flag-raising ceremony at St Kilda Town Hall on Monday May 26, 10am.

This is the 10th year that Sorry Day has been commemorated in the City of Port Phillip. Holding a Sorry Day was a recommendation of Bringing Them Home, a report detailing the removal of thousands of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children from their families, tabled in Federal Parliament on May 26, 1997. This year's theme is 'Unfinished Business: Reparations, Restitution & Rehabilitation'.

South Melbourne beach a finalist in the clean beach awards

The City of Port Phillip has been named a finalist in the 2008 Keep Australia Beautiful Clean Beach Challenge Awards in the following categories:

  • Beach Spirit Award
  • Community Government Partnership Award

for South Melbourne Beach.

This stretch of beach includes a life saving club, kiosk and playground with beach volleyball courts. The beach is cleaned and the rubbish bins emptied daily. Additional bins are put out in summer to accommodate increased visitation and there are supplementary daily bin collections when required.

A recycling bin trial will commence shortly on this beach between Kerferd Road and Victoria Avenue as part of the implementation of the Foreshore Management Plan and Council's Waste Wise Strategy.

There is also replanted coastal dune vegetation in the northern part of this beach. Foreshore bins have been removed from these dunes to ensure collection of litter bins does not damage the fragile dunes.

Council's Waste and Litter Education Officer has been running waste education programs in this area over summer and there is a strong partnership between the City of Port Phillip and the Life Saving Club towards managing the beach. The Life Saving Club also run Little Nippers at this beach.

The awards will be announced on Friday 30th May 2008.

For further information, please contact:

Nick Dunstan - Waste and Litter Education Officer 9209-6783

Darren Findlay - Coordinator - Street and Beach Cleaning 9209-6648

Kate Nagato - Foreshore Place Manager on 9209-6723
