Yellow Lid Recycling Bins City of Port Phillip logo

The green lid bin is for regular waste, the bin with the yellow lid is for co-mingled recycling waste.

A co-mingled recycling bin can have any recyclable items placed in it, all ready for your weekly collection.

In early 2004 the City of Port Phillip distributed a yellow lidded recycle bin to all houses to take recyclable materials. The recycling bins have replaced the recycling crates used by houses.

Changes to the kerbside recycling service were necessary in response to Worksafe Victoria's recently introduced 'Guidelines for Collection of Domestic Waste and Recyclables'.  So we changed the way we recycle to meet these guidelines and made the collection of recyclables safer in respect to manual handling of materials.

Recent improvements to sorting plant technology now enable fully mixed recyclables to be sorted efficiently for reprocessing and re-use, so all recyclable materials can now be mixed together in the one bin. Two stickers are fixed inside of bin lids. The stickers show which materials can and can't be recycled.

More than 33 per cent of all waste collected in Port Phillip is diverted from landfill and recycled. Residents have embraced the need to recycle and minimise waste going to landfill.

Recycling bin arrangements at flats and apartments have remained the same, other than the fitting of yellow lids to the bins to replace the red and blue lids. Now all the bins will can be used for fully mixed recyclables.
