Naturestrips are mostly a small piece of relatively unusable land in front of residential homes, alongside streets and roads often with a myriad of underground services and light or wire poles jutting up from them. Mostly grass and a street tree are the only adorning features. Its a service area for access into and out of cars and a repository for rubbish bin collection.
But they have the potential to be so much more and a number of residents have taken up the opportunity to better their street and gain a beautified public frontage to their property.
Guide lines have been developed to help residents develop a safe and sustainable landscaped naturestrip. You can take a look at the Naturestrip Guidelines 2007 here.
Maintaining a naturestrip
It is a common and accepted practice in Australia that the property owner / occupier of abutting properties maintain the naturestrip whatever the surface finish, this excludes the street tree which is maintained by council. The one exception is where a pensioner resides in the dwelling. In this instance a mowing service is provided by council.
Pensioner mowing service
If you receive the senior citizens pension from Centrelink you are eligible for the pensioner mowing service. Please call Lyn Mellas for a form 9209 6647 and your naturestrip will be mown by the parks and open space contractor.
