Aichi Women's Goodwill Mission
In October 1997, a group of ten women from Aichi Prefecture, Japan, including two residents from our sister city Obu, visited Port Phillip as part of the Aichi Women's Goodwill Mission. The purpose of their visit was to conduct research into such areas as education and health promotion, welfare, environmental and consumer issues, with a particular emphasis on issues relating to women.
The Aichi Women's Goodwill Mission is part of a program run by the Aichi Prefectural Government. Each year a group of ten women who are actively involved in various local organisations visit various countries to learn about women's issues from an international perspective and to apply the knowledge and information they have gained upon their return in ways that will benefit their local activities.
The members of the mission chose to visit Port Phillip because of its sister city ties with Obu City and because of its high percentage of female councillors and senior officers. During their visit, the women met with representatives of the City of Port Phillip's council and community. The City of Port Phillip facilitated an exchange forum at St Kilda Town Hall between the women from Aichi and women working in a range of key organisations and programs within the City.
The forum was a huge success with both local and international participants and the members of the Aichi Women's Goodwill Mission returned home with a greater sense of the significance that the City of Port Phillip places on women in society.
