The City of Port Phillip can help you with lost and found animals.

What to do if you lose a dog or cat

  • Take a reasonable area around where the pet was lost, and conduct a complete door-knock and letter-boxing describing your pet and giving a phone number for contact. You and your neighbours (next door both sides, over the road, & behind, around your block) should search sheds, garages, buildings, reserves, parks, schoolyards, beaches, rivers, creeks. For cats: inside ceilings should be investigated, also building works, trees, etc. For "entire" male dogs (not desexed) inquire about bitches in the area that are, or have recently been, "in season" or "on heat". Show your neighbours a recent colour photo, as not everyone is familiar with all breeds and marking colours
  • To report a lost animal online use eServices.  If you prefer you can call ASSIST on (03) 9209 6777 or TTy (03) 9209 6713 and ask for Animal Management.

  • Call & visit animal pounds or shelters (see below)

  • If near a municipal boundary, contact adjacent councils: City of Melbourne, BaysideGlen Eira, & Stonnington.

See the Animal Registration page for details about life-long animal ID tags and Microchipping which both increase your chances of getting your pet back.
