Local Radio

Community broadcasting is an international movement dedicated to the twin goals of community access and program diversity. Australia is a world leader in this field, with a strong independent sector existing alongside established public and commercially operated systems.

A number of community radio stations broadcast in the Port Phillip area: 

Southern FM, 88.3

Southern FM 88.3 is a non-commercial community radio station. It is the local community radio station for the south, south-eastern and bayside area of Melbourne. Over 300 volunteer programmers present more than 120 programs that go to air each week. The station broadcasts in approximately 20 languages including English, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. 

Southern FM is committed to producing programs for the people living and working in its broadcasting area.

JOY Melbourne 94.9 FM

JOY 94.9 is an independent voice for the diverse lesbian and gay communities listened to by 216,000 people in Melbourne and more online.  The station provides over 450 free Community Service Announcements on behalf of organisations that serve and support our community. The station is fuelled by the dedication of over 200 volunteers and only a handful of paid core staff. JOY 94.9 is proudly self-funded through on air sponsorship and most importantly membership.

RRR, 102.7 FM

Triple R endeavours to provide the best available programming, challenging its audience, and encouraging their support, feedback and involvement.

For over 30 years Triple R has shaped and inspired the culture of Melbourne. Since its inception as an educational broadcaster in 1976, Triple R has become Australia's largest community radio station with over 12,000 subscribers and 329,000 listeners per week.

Broadcasting on 102.7FM, the Triple R grid houses over 60 diverse programs. Music shows cover every genre imaginable from pop to punk rock, from R&B and electro to jazz, hip hop, country and metal. Specialist talks programs delve into topics as varied as the environment, human rights, politics, medical issues, gardening, cultural ventures and local interests.

PBS 106.7 FM

Community broadcaster PBS 106.7FM is an icon of Melbourne’s unique music and arts community. Since 1979, PBS has been a key provider of independent and diverse music. With over 80 specialist music programs ranging from soul to garage to country to jazz, PBS is dedicated to promoting and nurturing music in all its diversity.

PBS is a station which provides a clear alternative to both commercial and government radio programs. It broadcasts specialist programs on the innovative, and historically significant, music, arts and comedy that don't get a fair hearing anywhere else. PBS has developed a specialist format so that audiences with a taste for a particular form, such as a musical genre, can get a satisfying serve.

The PBS audience is anyone across metropolitan Melbourne who appreciates interesting music, non mainstream arts or independent news.

3CR, 855 AM

3CR was established in 1976 to provide a voice for those denied access to the mass media, particularly the working class, women, Indigenous people and the many community groups discriminated against in and by the mass media.

3CR actively discriminates in favour of Australian artists and composers, and plays at least 55% Australian music.

3CR provides programming of interest to a broad general audience and to specific interests groups. The expertise of presenters comes from their involvement in issues and their activism in the community. Groups broadcasting on 3CR cover the areas of social justice, sport, ethnic communities, the arts and music, and trade unions.

Around 500 volunteer programmers present more than 132 programs that go to air each week. The station broadcasts across the greater Melbourne area in over 15 languages, including English, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.

3ZZZ, 92.3 FM

Radio 3ZZZ is the largest ethnic community station in Australia. Working from studios in the Melbourne suburb of Fitzroy, the station is heard across the Melbourne metropolitan region, as far as Geelong to the west and Macedon to the north. Broadcasting 24 hours a day, it is estimated that more than 400,000 people listen to 3ZZZ every week. The station can now be heard across all Australia and the rest of the world through internet broadcasting.

3ZZZ is a community-based radio station. All the major ethnic communities living in Melbourne are affiliated with the station. Up to 400 volunteers broadcast in nearly 60 community languages for and on behalf of their own community.

3MBS, 103.5 FM

3MBS is a fine music community radio station in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia. Founded in 1975, 3MBS was the first FM station in Victoria and led the way for the introduction of community radio in Australia.

3MBS passionately supports fine music, especially Melbourne musicians and composers, and is the only locally-based classical music radio station in Victoria.
