Centenary of Women's Suffrage

Centenary of Victorian Women's Suffrage 1908-2008

Come along and help celebrate the Centenary of Victorian women gaining the right to vote by joining us for afternoon tea at the St. Kilda Library.

The celebration will feature a performance by Wilma Farrow as famous suffragist Vida Goldstein, exploring Vida's role in securing the vote for Victorian women, and enjoy the expertise and knowledge of historian Dr. Rosemay Francis discussing the struggle. The event will provide each of us with an opportunity to reflect on and acknowledge the importance of the Suffrage Movement.

Attendees will be given an opportunity to be part of the 2008 Monster Petition Project by signing a calico banner, a representation of the original Women's Suffrage Petition, known as the Monster Petition, in acknowledgement of the struggle and achievement of women.

This project is a State Government initiative that aims to recreate the original  petition by collecting 30,000 signatures from women all over Victoria. A number of banners have been distributed throughout Victoria and at the end of the year the banners will be sewn together and displayed at the finale of the celebrations at the Parliament Open Day on 16th November.

Historic photos of women's lives at work, in the home, and at play, will also be on display.

All are invited to come and celebrate this important legacy!

Wheelbarrow library wins award and international acclaim

Our Beach wheelbarrow library service recently won a Customer Service Innovation Award courtesy of Civica - the people who provide us with Spydus, our library management software system. Hurrah for orange barrows!

The same service also gained a write up in a prestigious U.S library journal and subsequently we received messages of acclaim from librarians throughout the United States. One librarian wrote: "I felt absolutely compelled to write and congratulate you on such a fabulous idea. Such flashes of brilliance should be acknowledged. I just wish we had a beach here in Chilicothe, Illinois, for me to 'borrow' your idea."

See the wheelbarrow library page for all the sun-baked and sandy details of our adventures.

SSSSHH! The Library CD

It's not everyday a library service releases an album. Somewhere between shelving stacks of returned books, answering tricky reference queries and re-programming catalogues, the staff at Port Phillip Library Service have put together SSSSHH!, a thrillingly diverse compilation written, performed and presented by the musical prodigies among our library staff.

SSSSHH! sells for only $12 a pop with all proceeds going to the St Kilda Youth Service.

The CD is available at all branches of the library service.
