Library computer access

Free PC and Internet Access

To use the computer services you need to be a member of Port Phillip Library Service.

Use of library computers is FREE! Printing costs 20c per page (black & white) or $1.00 per page (colour).

Bookings are essential - the service is extremely popular so we recommend you make a prior booking. You can book for a maximum of one hour per day and only one booking can be made at a time. Bookings are held for 10 minutes only past the start of the booking time.

Staff can get first time internet users started - let us know when you make your booking that you'd like a hand.

PCs and internet terminals offer Windows XP operating system, Microsoft Office Suite 2007 - Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Publisher, along with Open Source Software such as Paint.Net and Open Office, as well as facilities to type and read in a range of foreign languages. Scanners are available at some branches.

You can make a booking for any of these services by phone or when you visit the library. Check out the Library Branch locations and contact details.


Make your own Internet and facility bookings online!

Bookings can also be made by using our online booking system.Remember to ask a staff member to set up a password on your library record if you don't already have one. You'll need it to place your bookings!
 

Free Wireless Internet Access

Free wireless internet access is available at Albert Park, Emerald Hill, Port Melbourne and St. Kilda libraries. To access this facility you need:

  • to be a member of the Port Phillip Library Service
  • a laptop with wireless capability

NB: The internet is a public communications network which poses some security risk. Cautious wireless clients may choose not to transmit their credit card information and passwords while using WiFi hot spots. The Library service cannot assure the safety of your data when you use either our wired or wireless internet access.
 

Public Internet - Conditions of Use

Internet users are expected to abide by the following policies and guidelines. The Port Phillip Library Service (PPLS) reserves the right to terminate the internet access privileges of any person abusing these policies.

  • PPLS does not guarantee the authority or accuracy of information found on the Internet
  • Users access the Internet at their own risk. PPLS is not responsible for the availability of material on the Internet that may be offensive to users, nor for users accessing those materials
  • PPLS is not responsible for security on the Internet. Sending credit card numbers, account numbers, your name, address or other information via the Internet is undertaken at the user's risk
  • Users must not alter or damage computer hardware, software, settings or files
  • Users must observe all applicable Federal, State and Local laws, including laws applying to copyright
  • Users must not download or display information or images which may reasonably be deemed to be offensive to others.
     

All Abilities Access PC

St Kilda library has an enhanced internet and word processing facility to improve library access for people with special needs.

The enhanced facilities include a height adjustable table, which is perfect for wheelchairs, a monitor with high-visibility display settings and an easy-to-use trackball mouse.

This computer is set aside for users who have conditions which prevent or impede them from using the library's other fifteen standard-interface internet computers.

There is a variety of software installed on the computer: Windows XP, Microsoft 2007 Office Suite - Word, Excel, Powerpoint - Acrobat Reader, WinZip and Media Player, Internet Explorer and Opera. To book, users need to call the St Kilda Library on 9209 6655. Users can always ask staff for help when making their booking.


Computer Games!

Console games

Book in to play the Wii or the Playstation 2!!

  • At St Kilda library there's a Wii and a Playstation
  • At Port Melbourne library you can play the Wii.

Bookings are for 1 hour only and there is a set game for each day. 

You can book these units by phone, when you visit the library or via the online booking system.

 

Children's games PC

The St Kilda library offers a games PC for young users. Games currently on offer:

  • Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets
  • Monsters Inc.
  • Power Puff Girls

This computer is only available for users under 18 years. See staff to make a booking.
 

Council Information Online

Catalogue terminals within the libraries also provide access to the City of Port Phillip website. These computers can not be used for general internet access.
 

Other Public Internet Access Venues

You can find details of other public internet access venues on the i@ website: http://www.internet-access.vic.gov.au. The site also includes a short tutorial on using the internet.
