Food security tool kit

The Food Security Working Group has developed this kit, designed to assist you/your staff to:

  • Identify clients who are at risk of or experiencing food insecurity;
  • Recognise the contributing factors to food insecurity
  • Direct an individual to the appropriate services which will address the contributing factors.

Health Promotion Plan

ISEPICH Health Promotion Plan 2009-12

Action Plan 2009-10

Action Plan 2010-11 brief version. A full version is available - contact isepich@portphillip.vic.gov.au

Action Plan 2011-12 - includes evaluation plan.

Our first health promotion goal for 2009-12 is:

  • to reduce health inequalities by increasing social inclusion and community capacity to address the social determinants of health.

What are we doing?

1. Developing an ISEPICH health equity and sustainability strategy

Inequity and environmental degradation both have negative impacts on health especially for disadvantaged groups. ISEPICH is developing an integrated approach to promote greater equity and environmental sustainability in our local area.

We held a forum to develop a framework in November 2011 and are holding a forum to identify actions in February 2012. For more information see What's New above.

In 2009 we consulted with international students. The ISEPICH catchment includes two universities and two TAFE colleges and has a large number of international students who face many challenges. See the report for more information.

In 2010 we consulted with members of older Culturally and Linguistically Diverse groups. Several of these groups are at higher than average risk of admission to hospital for diabetes consultations. See the Emerging Issues presentation for more information.

2. Advocating to reduce inequality

The ISEPICH Income Equity working group campaigned during 2009-11 for greater income equity - see Increase NewStart Now.

The Working Group also made a submission to the Parliamentary review of Social Security compliance requirements. You can view the review here.

The Human Rights Working Group has produced a booklet 'Human Rights in daily life'. The booklet uses a story approach, through the story of "Doris", to illustrate how the Victorian Charter of Human Rights and Responsibilities can be used in advocacy tool to improve access to services. For more information contact isepich@portphillip.vic.gov.au

3. Working to increase social inclusion

The Social Inclusion Working Group (SIWG) has produced a Social Inclusion and Equity checklist for workers and organisations. A larger print version is also available (A3 folds to A4 size). A workshop to provide information and training on the checklist was held on October 2011.

The Doing our best to promote social inclusion report, developed in 2009-10, includes definitions, information about local programs and good practice, and recommendations.

A SIWG subgroup has also produced a report on Improving Access to Community Facilities in ISEPICH 2010. In 2011-12 SIWG or subgroups are also addressing:

  • Health Promoting Schools
  • Transport
  • Preventing Violence against women
  • Partnerships around Smoke free environments
  • Glen Eira Community Men's Shed

Our second health promotion goal for 2009-12 is:

  • to create a supportive environment that enhances sustainable and affordable living in the inner south east.

What are we doing?

1. Working to increase food security and reduce barriers to healthy eating in the inner south east.

Food security may be defined as ‘the state in which all persons obtain a nutritionally adequate, culturally acceptable diet at all times through local non-emergency sources’ (Community Food Security Coalition 1995).

The Food Security Working Group has developed resources and training for workers whose clients may be food insecure. See link at the top of this page.

The following resources are also available
Food Security and Healthy Eating in the inner south east  (information leaflet)

Food Security and Healthy Eating: who's doing what? (list of programs and activities in the area)

2. Working to increase active transport and physical activity in the inner south east.

ISEPICH, with the support of a volunteer, is currently updating an Affordable Physical Activity directory, to be used for referral by professionals and for the general public.

The Falls Prevention Network supports information sharing, peer education on falls prevention and workforce development. For information about current projects see What's New above.

3. Strengthening the focus on environmental sustainability in health promotion

Please see the information under Goal 1 above.

Our third health promotion goal for 2009-12 is:

  • to increase the capacity for integrated health promotion in ISEPICH

Activities include providing training and development opportunities (in collaboration with the Department of Health) such as Introduction to Health Promotion workshops and Health Promotion Short courses.

We also work in collaboration with the ISEPICH Community Advisory Group to increase community participation in health promotion
