'Making Melbourne More Liveable - Inner Melbourne Action Plan' has been developed in response to the key directions and initiatives of Melbourne 2030, the metropolitan planning strategy to manage Melbourne's growth and development of the next 30 years. The project has been jointly funded by a Victorian Government grant (as part of the Melbourne 2030 Targeted Grants Program), partner Councils and VicUrban.

IMAP's vision is for ...

An Inner Melbourne region that embodies creativity, liveability, propriety and sustainability in a range of diverse neighbourhoods. A region where the 19th century character informs modern development to create pedestrian oriented places - places that support a tolerant and inclusive community and provide a variety of experiences and opportunities for residents, workers and visitors; a region that responds to its capital city role by supporting arts, entertainment, retail, regional facilities and the functions of the port.

Strategies

IMAP outlines eleven strategies for inner Melbourne including celebrating Melbourne's heritage; linking and improving transport routes; minimising traffic congestion; increasing public transport use; supporting diverse character of inner Melbourne's shopping strips; promoting business investment; linking parks and open spaces; and promoting tourism.

Governance and implementation of IMAP

Implementation will involve on-going regional cooperation, regional decision making and the commitment of partner councils. To enable this, an IMAP Implementation Committee has been established (pursuant to Section 86 of the Local Government Act) with two representatives from each of the partner councils. The Committee will meet quarterly and co-ordinate the implementation of IMAP actions.
