Overview

The current Housing Strategy, released in 2007, provides a clear overview and assessment of the housing situation in the City of Port Phillip.

The Housing Strategy:

  • sets out a broad vision for housing and residential development in Port Phillip
  • makes recommendations regarding the future management of housing and residential development in the City.
  • updates the 1997 Housing Strategy to reflect the changes that have occured to housing policy since that time.
  • provides a locally relevant response to Melbourne 2030 and the Inner Regional Housing Statement by identifying areas suitable for new residential growth
  • providing strategic justification for new housing policies in the Port Phillip Planning Scheme.
  • is important because it will allow Council to pro-actively deal with housing and residential issues by providing certainty for both the community and developers.
  • It sets out a framework to ensure that Port Phillip has a diverse range of housing but at the same time maintains the character and amenity of the city's residential areas.

Council's vision for housing in the municipality is:

"To direct residential growth to locations which offer the greatest access to shops, public transport and other services, and provide housing diversity by facilitating the development of affordable, accessible and suitable housing which meets the needs of all current and future residents, including the disadvantaged and those who are unable to access the private housing market."
