The Urban History Consultative Committee acts as an advisory committee for the council on behalf of the Port Phillip community.
It provides strategic advice and expertise to the council on policy development and the planning of the council's local history and heritage services, in particular:
- The Port Phillip City Collection Management Policy, including acquisitions, conservation, research and documentation, exhibitions, promotion, education and related services
- Development of an Urban History Centre and related programs to increase access to the collections and other relevant historical material
- The Heritage Recognition Program which recognises significant heritage sites through the installation of plaques
- The relationship between the council's local history and heritage services and local history networks.
The committee's work is guided by the following principles:
- Integration and promotion of heritage related projects and services across the council departments and other groups in the City of Port Phillip
- Accessibility of heritage projects and services at a local level
- Participation in local history and heritage activities across the City of Port Phillip.
The members of the committee include a councillor, representatives of the local historical societies and others with an interest and expertise in heritage matters.
