The City of Port Phillip website contains a wealth of information and services offered by the council and local community, including festivals, events and services in the local area. The following information will help you use and understand our website.
Browser Versions
This website is compatible with :
- Netscape Navigator 4.0+
- Internet Explorer 4.0+
- Text only browsers.
Research conducted using Webtrends in July 2001 indicated that only 0.31% of Internet Explorer users are using version 3.x and 1.35% of Netscape users are using version 3.x. We also found that 97.76% of all users had either Netscape or Internet Explorer. By providing functionality for version 4.0 or greater for both Internet Explorer and Netscape, and adding text browser compatibility for Accessibility reasons, we consider that we will achieve a satisfactory coverage of browsers with this site.

Technical Overview
This site has been designed using open source technologies. Other technical features are:
- The site is designed for monitors using a resolution of 800 x 600 dpi or higher.
- The site is designed for 16bit High Colour but will operate with low impact at 256 colours. Our research indicates that the percentage of the population using 256 colours is at 4% and dropping.
- There is a Printable version of all content pages. This can be accessed via the link in the top right hand corner of every page. From there, simply use the Print function in your browser to print the page.
- There are several javascript elements on the site which enhance the ease of navigation. However, the site also works without the Javascript for people unable to use this technology.

Accessibility
An accessible web site is one that is available to all user groups. In general, this means that the web site is accessible by people with disabilities and/or people who use older computers, unpopular operating systems or no plug-ins.
For people with disabilities, this requires that the web site works with 'assistive' technologies such as screen readers, magnifiers and pointers, and is available to people with certain disabilities, such as poor vision or motor difficulties (unable to use a mouse).
This site has achieved World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) Web Accessibility Initative "AA" level of accessibility compliance and council is committed to maintianing this standard over time. Yearly independant audits of the website will be undertaken to ensure we maintain this standard. "AA" means that information is accessible, but a user with a disability may have some difficulty (to a lesser extent than "A" level) in navigating the site to find the information they are looking for.
For more information about Council's Accessibility compliance audit, see the W3C AA compliant statement link in the footer.

Web Site Search
If you cannot find what you are looking for, try:
- Search (located top right of every page)
- Site Map (located in footer of every page)
The search facility is available on all pages of the website. The search is, in the first instance, always a keyword or "meta data" search. This search will look at all of the keywords entered (Boolean "and"). All matches will be displayed with the navigation string to the page containing the information. The name of the relevant page with the keyword will be returned in the search results page as a link.
Whether the search returns any matches or not, you have the option to do an detailed search. This is displayed below the search results. The detailed search has an input field where the user can enter what they are searching on. The advanced search is Boolean "or" so it searches for either of two or more words entered in the input field.

External Links
In most cases, we have included a description about the type of information and services that can be found on an external website via a link from this website.
Links to external sites will open a new browser window. A dialogue box will appear when you click on an external link informing you that the link will be opened in a new window and checking that you wish to proceed and leave the Port Phillip website.
See the Disclaimer link in the footer of this page for legal information about external links.

Downloading an Attachment
Choosing to download an attachment on this website, will generate a dialogue box which informs you of the file name, file type, file size and estimated download time over a 56kb modem. Most attachments are in Adobe PDF format Version 4 or 5. We will be actively converting many of these documents to plain text or html over the coming months to improve their accessibility. Note that there is an instruction on the download screen that you can contact council for a copy of any document on the website if you are unable to download it.
If you require any further information or assistance, please contact the Port Phillip Online Project Team on (03) 9209-6777 or email ASSIST.
