Southside Art Project - connecting galleries

The City of Port Phillip is home to one of Melbourne's most diverse group of commercial galleries and public art spaces united under the banner of Southside Arts.

Southside Art @ Treasury Place

In September 2000, the Member for Albert Park, Hon. John Thwaites MLA, Deputy Premier, approached the City of Port Phillip to see whether there was a way that he could acknowledge the work of artists in his electorate through his electoral office. The City of Port Phillip called for expressions of interest from local galleries, provided advice, and acted as facilitator for meetings between the Offiice of the Deputy Premier and local groups. A plan was devised to stage rotating exhibits at the offices at 1 Treasury Place as a way of presenting local artists to an audience they would not normally reach.

The first launch was held in February 2001, and the first local gallery to be represented was the Watch Tower Studio. This was followed by further successful launches of artists' work from Artefact and Jackman Galleries, the Bowling Club Studio Artists,  Linden, studio artists from Gasworks Arts Park, Brightspace, artsofar, Middle Park Fine Art Gallery, Peter Gertler Studio Gallery, Anne Middleton Gallery, MARS and Uber Gallery.

Southside Arts Projects
As a result of the original Treasury Place initiative, local galleries and visual arts venues  discussed ideas to to increase local awareness of the burgeoning range of visual arts venues and artists working in Port Phillip. In 2002 the group created a  3 minutes download via 56K modem Visual Arts Map including information about the range of local galleries and museums, and also in a sample of public arts sites, monuments and murals in the municipality.

The guide was made available through galleries, libraries, town halls, local hotels, cafes, and bookshops, and at selected venues in the inner city area. This initiative was supported through the Port Phillip Cultural Development Fund.

The two public gallery spaces assisted by funding from the City of Port Phillip are Linden and Gasworks Arts Park. Both galleries present a range of associated activities which support their exhibition programs to enhance an understanding of contemporary and community art. Council also manages an Access Gallery at St Kilda Town Hall.

Gasworks Arts Park

21 Graham Street, Albert Park 3206
Telephone: (03) 8606 4200

Gasworks is an arts precinct situated in a beautiful three hectares of grassy park planted with native trees, shrubs and grasses. Formerly a gas production plant which operated from 1873 until its closure in 1957, the park continues to be surrounded by half the original 6 metre high brick wall, giving the impression of an urban oasis.

Housed in renovated industrial buildings, the Gasworks arts facilities include a 240 seat theatre, a rehearsal studio / performance space, community access tuition spaces, a darkroom, sculpture studio, painting studios, ceramics studios, and a gallery. The precinct has 15 studio artist tenants and Books Illustrated - a children's bookshop, tuition centre and Illustrators Gallery.

The park space itself features a children's playground, free barbecues, sculptures, a formal native garden and attractive walkways.

The precinct is owned by the City of Port Phillip and is leased by Gasworks Arts Inc, a community based non-profit organisation which presents an annual program of festivals, events, exhibitions and performances. When not being used for the Gasworks program, facilities are available for hire.
