Southside Art Project - connecting galleries
The City of Port Phillip is home to one of Melbourne's most diverse group of commercial galleries and public art spaces. The Southside Arts project brought them together to create a series of major exhibitions at 1 Treasury Place from 2001 to 2007.
Southside Art @ Treasury Place
In September 2000, the Member for Albert Park, Hon. John Thwaites MLA, Deputy Premier, approached the City of Port Phillip to see whether there was a way that he could acknowledge the work of artists in his electorate through his electoral office. The City of Port Phillip called for expressions of interest from local galleries, provided advice, and acted as facilitator for meetings between the Offiice of the Deputy Premier and local groups. A plan was devised to stage rotating exhibits at the offices at 1 Treasury Place as a way of presenting local artists to an audience they would not normally reach.
The first launch was held in February 2001, and the first local gallery to be represented was the Watch Tower Studio. This was followed by further successful launches of artists' work from Artefact and Jackman Galleries, the Bowling Club Studio Artists, Linden, studio artists from Gasworks Arts Park, Brightspace, artsofar, Middle Park Fine Art Gallery, Peter Gertler Studio Gallery, Anne Middleton Gallery, MARS, Uber Gallery and the International College of the Creative Arts (photography).
Southside Arts Projects
As a result of the original Treasury Place initiative, local galleries and visual arts venues colllaborated to increase local awareness of the burgeoning range of visual arts venues and artists working in Port Phillip. In 2002 the group created a Visual Arts Map including information about the range of local galleries and museums, and also in a sample of public arts sites, monuments and murals in the municipality.
This guide was made available through galleries, libraries, town halls, local hotels, cafes, and bookshops, and at selected venues in the inner city area and was supported through the Port Phillip Cultural Development Fund.

Gallery listings
The three public gallery spaces assisted by funding from the City of Port Phillip are Linden and Gasworks Arts Park and The Town Hall Gallery. The galleries present a range of associated activities which support their exhibition programs to enhance an understanding of contemporary and community art.
The Gallery - St Kilda Town Hall
This new space launched at the Town Hall in March 2008, at the St Kilda Town Hall, delivers art exhibitions which represent issues of particular relevance to the Port Phillip community. For over 20 years, Linden has been devoted exclusively to the exhibition of art produced by living artists.
Linden is a not-for-profit space and has Deductible Gift Recipient status. By removing commercial imperatives and by paying artists wherever possible, Linden provides living artists with the freedom to create new and challenging work.
Linden supports artists by paying them for the development of new work and by providing them with studio space at no cost. Financial support for living artists is fundamental to allowing them to explore their ideas without compromise.
Unlike most contemporary art spaces, Linden is not a clinical white cube or industrial concrete cavern. Linden has the great fortune of being located in a majestic Victorian building of the same name in vibrant St Kilda. The former residence provides a unique experience for both artists and visitors. For the artists the space represents an opportunity to respond to an historic domestic space, while visitors are captured by the contrast of contemporary art and Victorian architecture.
Linden is also home to artists’ studios, a library, community space and gallery offices and grounds for sculpture and performance. Linden regularly hosts public lectures and other education events. The diverse activities of the building give Linden a very special appeal and a unique place in the St Kilda community and in the world of contemporary art.

Gasworks is an arts precinct situated in a beautiful three hectares of grassy park planted with native trees, shrubs and grasses. Formerly a gas production plant which operated from 1873 until its closure in 1957, the park continues to be surrounded by half the original 6 metre high brick wall, giving the impression of an urban oasis.
Housed in renovated industrial buildings, the Gasworks arts facilities include a 240 seat theatre, a rehearsal studio / performance space, community access tuition spaces, a darkroom, sculpture studio, painting studios, ceramics studios, and a gallery. The precinct has 15 studio artist tenants and Books Illustrated - a children's bookshop, tuition centre and Illustrators Gallery.
The park space itself features a children's playground, free barbecues, sculptures, a formal native garden and attractive walkways.
The precinct is owned by the City of Port Phillip and is leased by Gasworks Arts Inc, a community based non-profit organisation which presents an annual program of festivals, events, exhibitions and performances. When not being used for the Gasworks program, facilities are available for hire.
