Fishermans Bend Planning and Economic Development Strategy
Council has adopted the Fishermans Bend Planning & Economic Development Strategy
The Fishermans Bend Planning & Economic Development Strategy underwent extensive public consultation with local businesses and land owners, state government departments and utility companies. The Council formally considered written submissions and determined to adopt the Structure Plan on 22 November 2010.
Background
The Fishermans Bend Planning and Economic Development Strategy sets out Council's vision for the future of the area as a dynamic, inner-city business precinct supporting intensive, high value-adding industrial activities and characterised by the highest levels of environmental sustainability, amenity and innovation. A range of initiatives and policy positions are indentified that Council and its partners may pursue to positively influence the ongoing development of the precinct. These initiatives are grouped under three themes: Business and Economic Development; Strategic Land Use Planning; and Environmental Sustainability.
The area has been home to several international design and manufacturing companies, including pioneers in the automotive and aerospace industries such as General Motors Holden, Commonwealth Aircraft Corporation, the Aeronautical Research Laboratory and Boeing. Today a number of other advanced manufacturing firms are located in the area including, the Defence Science and Technology Organisation, Hawker de Havilland, GKN Aerospace Engineering Services, the Cooperative Research Centre for Advanced Composite Structures, Kraft Foods, and Toyota Australia.
Fishermans Bend is an attractive business location due to its excellent infrastructure and strategic location close to the Melbourne CBD, as well as easy access to interstate and international transport connections. This strategy will encourage a new generation of smaller, internationally competitive industrial businesses to locate in Fishermans Bend, showcasing the highest standards of environmental sustainable design and practice.
