Weddings & Functions in Parks

Minor Events in Parks, Gardens, Foreshore and Open Space

Our open spaces are popular places for minor events. Under the City of Port Phillip Local Law No. 1, an organised sporting, recreational, cultural, commercial or social gathering of twenty (20) or more adults which is held on a road or council land requires a permit.

If your event is promoting/ advertising a product or organisation or you are expecting in excess of 200 people in attendance please see the Events and Activities page

Minor event permits are required for events that have in attendance, less than 200 people. Permits are granted for a two hour minimum and a six hour maximum. This is not an exclusive permit, the gardens are a public space and there will still be a number of gatherings going on.

Organisers are required to provide a public liability certificate of currency or it can be purchased from the City of Port Phillip for $25.

Please note that the months between October to March are Major Event & Festivals Season and some open spaces and roads may not be available. For a list of Scheduled Events and Festivals see the Events and Activities page

The base pricing structure for a two hour minor event permit is as follows;

Heritage Garden Private function   $130.00
Heritage Garden Corporate function  $246.00
General Garden / Open Space Private Function  $82.00
General Garden / Open Space Corporate Function  $216.00

Additional fees may be applicable to your permit and are as follows;

Heritage Garden Private function additional hour  $65.00
Heritage Garden Corporate function additional hour  $123.00 
General Garden / Open Space Private Function additional hour  $41.00 
General Garden / Open Space Corporate Function additional hour   $108.00 
Structures to be erected (rides, marquees, jumping castles etc) price per structure $194.00 
City of Port Phillip Public Liability insurance cover $25.00

*Heritage Gardens include; Catani Gardens, St Vincent Gardens & The St Kilda Botanical Gardens.

Wedding Ceremonies

To host a wedding ceremony in a City of Port Phillip Open Space, and you anticipate more than 20 adults, you are required to apply for a Minor Event Permit. Permits are allocated a 2 hour window.

Organisers are required to provide a public liability certificate of currency or it can be purchased from the City of Port Phillip for $25.

The base pricing structure for a minor event permit is as follows;

Heritage Garden Wedding Ceremony  $130.00
General Garden / Open Space Wedding Ceremony $82.00

Additional fees may be applicable to your permit and are as follows;

Heritage Garden Wedding Ceremony additional hour  $65.00 
General Garden / Open Space Wedding Ceremony additional hour $41.00 
Structures to be erected (rides, marquees, jumping castles etc) price per structure $194.00
City of Port Phillip Public Liability insurance cover $25.00

 Heritage Gardens include the St Kilda Botanical Gardens, St Vincent Gardens & Catani Gardens.

The City of Port Phillip cannot guarantee continual or constant flower displays in any parks or gardens and in particular the Alistair Clark Rose Garden due to seasonal variables and the management of annual displays.
The planting schedule in parks & open spaces and the St Kilda Botanical Gardens may affect special events.

The below information is a guide only

March and September  Annual displays may be starting to fade 
April and October  Annual displays are removed
May and November  Annual seedlings with small flowers are pruned to promote foliage growth 
June and July  Roses undergo winter pruning
