Weekend Clearway for Cyclists

A clearway for cyclists has been instated along Ormond Esplanade, Elwood between Glen Huntly Road and St Kilda Street, to operate on Saturdays and Sundays, from 6 - 10am. This is an addition to clearways which already exist during weekday peaks to benefit motorists.

Over the past two years, the council has been working with the neighbouring Cities of Bayide and Kingston, along with Victoria Police, VicRoads, Bicycle Victoria, local cyclists and the Sandringham Hospital on ways to make Beach Road route safer for cyclists, especially on weekend mornings when more than 5000 cyclists can travel along Beach Road - more than three times the number of cars and other vehicles.

While the clearway is operating, motorists will be able to park their cars in the foreshore parking lots and side streets.

The City of Port Phillip supports http://www.beachroadcyclist.com, a website where you can get all the best info on events, training and general news regarding on-road cycling throughout the state.

Cycling in Port Phillip

The City of Port Phillip's geographic location combined with better than average bicycle facilities and low journey-to-work travel distances provides a unique opportunity to further promote this attractive, healthy and environmentally friendly form of transport.

The city contains an extensive on- and off-road bicycle network connecting the majority of areas within the municipality. There are approximately 49km of existing on-road routes and 14.5km of existing off-road routes, not including those at Albert Park Lake reserve.

Port Phillip also has in excess of 300 bicycle racks located in all shopping centres, foreshore areas and railway stations. New racks are installed on an ongoing basis as required or requested. The majority of off-road recreational paths have now been constructed, and we are now concentrating on new on-road lanes and linkages.

Bike Plan 2011-2020

The City of Port Phillip wants to provide an environment where cyclists of all abilities can ride their bikes on a safe, accessible and complete network. Bike Plan 2011-2020 is about making Port Phillip better for bike riding. Its focus is on improving bike riding infrastructure and networks across Port Phillip while continuing to motivate more people to ride more often and to more places.

RiderLog

RiderLog is a free iphone app made by Bicycle Network Victoria. The app allows you to track where, how far, and how fast you ride. The default setting is anonymous, although you can choose to share some information about yourself if you like- it will help us to plan the best possible bike networks.

Cyclesmart

The minimum daily exercise recommended for good health is 30 minutes, or about 10 kilometres cycled comfortably on a bike. Log into Cyclesmart and record the number of kilometres on your cycle computer that you have cycled each day. Keeping up to date on Cyclesmart is very easy. You don't need to enter data every day; as you enter an odometer reading, which is cumulative, the system can estimate how much you're riding per day based on how much you ride per week (it assumes you ride daily, unless you enter data even on days when you haven't ridden).

RACV Bike Assist

RACV has developed a new road service, called Bike Assist, to assist cyclists who experience difficulties and require roadside assistance. The aim of Bike Assist is to get your nominated bicycle going after a puncture or other mishap.

For more information or to join call 13 19 55, or visit RACVonline.

Bike Share

The City of Port Phillip has become part of an exciting new public bike hire scheme, called Melbourne Bike Share.  Four Bike Share stations have been installed in South Melbourne with several  more planned. The four sites are near the corners of Clarendon and Market Streets, Clarendon and York Streets, St Kilda Road and Park Street and on Bowen Crescent near St Kilda Road.

Bike sharing is a great way to get around the city as an alternative to driving. It is also healthier and more sustainable.

Melbourne Bike Share is a joint RACV/Victorian Government bicycle hire scheme. The initiative is supported by the City of Melbourne, City of Port Phillip and Bicycle Victoria.

For more information on the bike share scheme, please go to the website at www.melbournebikeshare.com.au.

Bike Path Maps

See the Port Phillip Bike Path Map for details of on- & off-road bike paths, and proposed bike paths in the City of Port Phillip.

The Speedways and Greenways map identifies the existing and proposed routes on Port Phillip's bicycle network as discussed in the Cycling Strategy 2005-2010, which was adopted by council in early April, 2005. A final copy of this document will be available soon.

See the City of Melbourne Bike Map for bike paths in and around the Melbourne CBD.

Port Phillip Bicycle User Group (BUG)

As a fantastic way for cycling enthusiasts to meet other cyclists, find bike buddies, organise group rides and keep the council informed about the condition of Port Phillip's bicycle network and facilities, the Port Phillip Bicycle User Group (BUG) has been formed.
