Ride to Work Day

On Wednesday October 17, the City of Port Phillip will be celebrating the first National Ride to Work Day by providing a breakfast for all cyclists using the Bay Trail and Beach Road on their way to work.

All cyclists are welcome to stop for a bite to eat in Middle Park at the former site of the Middle Park Lifesaving Club (opposite Armstrong Street) as they make their way to work. Being a building that no longer exists navigation may seem a little tricky, but we guarantee you'll have no trouble finding us and if all else fails it's Melway reference 2N D1

Breakfast will be available from 7am until 9am.

Weekend Clearway for Cyclists

A clearway for cyclists has been instated along Ormond Esplanade, Elwood between Glen Huntly Road and St Kilda Street, to operate on Saturdays and Sundays, from 6 - 10am. This is an addition to clearways which already exist during weekday peaks to benefit motorists.

Over the past two years, the council has been working with the neighbouring Cities of Bayide and Kingston, along with Victoria Police, VicRoads, Bicycle Victoria, local cyclists and the Sandringham Hospital on ways to make Beach Road route safer for cyclists, especially on weekend mornings when more than 5000 cyclists can travel along Beach Road - more than three times the number of cars and other vehicles.

While the clearway is operating, motorists will be able to park their cars in the foreshore parking lots and side streets.

The City of Port Phillip supports www.beachroadcyclist.com, a website where you can get all the best info on events, training and general news regarding on-road cycling throughout the state.

Cycling in Port Phillip

The City of Port Phillip's geographic location combined with better than average bicycle facilities and low journey-to-work travel distances provides a unique opportunity to further promote this attractive, healthy and environmentally friendly form of transport.

The city contains an extensive on- and off-road bicycle network connecting the majority of areas within the municipality. There are approximately 49km of existing on-road routes and 14.5km of existing off-road routes, not including those at Albert Park Lake reserve.

Port Phillip also has in excess of 300 bicycle racks located in all shopping centres, foreshore areas and railway stations. New racks are installed on an ongoing basis as required or requested. The majority of off-road recreational paths have now been constructed, and we are now concentrating on new on-road lanes and linkages.

Cycle Plan addresses five key response areas:

  1. The Network
  2. End of Trip Facilities
  3. Bicycle Facility Maintenance
  4. Green Transport Plan
  5. Increasing Ridership

Cyclesmart

The minimum daily exercise recommended for good health is 30 minutes, or about 10 kilometres cycled comfortably on a bike. Log into Cyclesmart and record the number of kilometres on your cycle computer that you have cycled each day.

Keeping up to date on Cyclesmart is very easy. You don't need to enter data every day; as you enter an odometer reading, which is cumulative, the system can estimate how much you're riding per day based on how much you ride per week (it assumes you ride daily, unless you enter data even on days when you haven't ridden).

Cyclesmart is part of TravelSmart, a state government program that aims to increase walking, cycling and catching public transport, while reducing private car use!

Westgate Punt: Fisherman's Bend - Scienceworks

The trial of a subsidised weekly commuter service for cyclists and pedestrians across the Yarra River closed on Friday 2 June 2006 as a result of low patronage.

Since December 2005, Hobsons Bay City Council has administered a trial on behalf of a stakeholder group that subsidised a weekday commuter ferry service for bicycles and pedestrians that cross the Yarra River.

The stakeholder group that consisted of Hobsons Bay, Maribyrnong, Melbourne and Port Phillip City Councils, together with Parks Victoria, the Port of Melbourne Corporation and Bicycle Victoria, provided the cross-river trial transport in morning and afternoon peak times on working days.

After four months of operation, and despite considerable publicity, usage rates have remained below 25 per cent, with a monthly average high of 61 passengers per day in March, the highest usage recorded to date.

The decision to terminate the service is based on the responsibility of the stakeholders to provide the best possible amenities to the greatest number of people and at the lowest possible cost.

A Business Plan is being prepared that will incorporate all relevant information on the trial. This will be incorporated into an information package that will be made available to operators that may be interested in putting in a proposal to operate the services in the future.
