Council Elections
The next Council general election will be conducted on Saturday 27 October 2012.
Attendance Election
The 2012 election will be conducted as an Attendance election, however, postal voting and early voting will also be available.
Key Election Dates
The Council voters’ roll will be available for inspection from Monday 27th August to Friday 31st August 2012, to enable you to check if you are on the roll.
If you are not on the roll, the last day to make application is Friday 31st August 2012, by 4.00pm. See the section below “Eligibility to Vote” to find out who can vote at Council elections and how to apply.
Nominations to stand as a candidate for the 2012 Council election open Thursday 20th September and close at noon on Tuesday 25th September 2012. Nominations can be made at the Returning Officer’s office, the location of which will be advertised at a later date.
Postal voting and early voting will commence on Wednesday 26th September 2012.. Polling locations to be advised.
Candidate Information Session
An information session will be held for all prospective candidates on Thursday 26th July 2012 commencing at 6.30pm in the St Kilda Town Hall Council Chamber. The information evening will be jointly conducted by council and the Municipal Association of Victoria. Topics discussed will include:
• Who is eligible to stand as a candidate?
• What is local government?
• What is expected of a councillor?
• How do I become a councillor?
There is also a website sponsored by the Municipal Association of Victoria that provides information about being a candidate - www.standforcouncil.com.au
Eligibility to Vote
To find out if you are eligible to vote at a Council election, click on the Who may vote in Council Elections? link below. Application forms can be downloaded from this link.
A person can only vote once at the Council election, even if that person owns property in more than one ward.
Voting is compulsory for residents. You are encouraged to vote but do not have to vote if you are aged 70 years or over, or you are a non-resident voter. There is a penalty for residents who do not vote.
