What do we mean by neighbourhood development?
Feedback from the Community Summit suggested that people wanted to be more involved and understand what was happening in their neighbourhood. This component explores ways the Council can support the development of local connections, networks and improvements to our neighbourhoods.

Neighbourhood Development Action Plan - Year 1
The Neighbourhood Development Action Plan for 2007-08 outlines how Council will make funds available to provide 'matching' grants to kick start community activities in our neighbourhoods through our Small Poppy Fund. The central idea behind this program is that both the process and the outcome are equally important to the success of a project. The outcome of the project must improve neighbourhood amenity but the processes of people working together on the development and implementation of a project are equally important.

Project Ideas
Do you want to get together with your neighbours to make your neighbourhood better but aren't sure what to do? Download some project ideas that you could do with your neighbours.
Street Parties
Ever wanted to meet other people in your street but didn't know how? Then StreetLife can help you with simple ideas and guidelines to get started.
StreetLife is a partnership between the council and the Port Phillip Community Group (PPCG).
StreetLife is designed to help you hold a street party or develop your own idea for a street-based event. The PPCG can help you with road closures, public liability insurance and suggest creative ideas to make your event a success. They also have a BBQ that they can lend to you for free. More information is available at http://www.portphillip.vic.gov.au/streetlife.html.
Naturestrip beatification
Naturestrips are mostly a small piece of relatively unusable land in front of residential homes, alongside streets and roads often with a myriad of underground services and light or wire poles jutting up from them. Mostly grass and a street tree are the only adorning features. They have the potential to be so much more and a number of residents have taken up the opportunity to better their street and gain a beautified public frontage to their property. More information including our guidelines are available at http://www.portphillip.vic.gov.au/nature_strips.html.
Brian Boyce is a St Kilda resident passionate about the environment. So strong is his passion, that he has developed a web site to evoke passion in his community. The Naturestrip Project is aimed at residents interested in putting the 'NATURE' into their Naturestrip. The aim of the project is to assist residents in turning their unimaginative, unsustainable grass into a mini garden oasis that benefits not only the immediate surroundings but streets as a whole and in turn connects and greens our city. Its the old adage 'Act Local, Think Global' at work. Check out www.naturestrip.com.au for more information and find out how you can get involved.
Compost and Worm Farms
Composting saves valuable land fill space and can be used as fertiliser in your garden and can improve soil condition. Compost bins and worms farms can be purchased at a reduced rate from the Depot. More information is available at http://www.portphillip.vic.gov.au/compost.html.
Community Gardens
Community gardens are not only fertile places for growing vegies, fruits and flowers but also, for creating new social connections and releasing the stresses of everyday life. With many of our residents living in flats, and one of the lowest ratios of open space to residents in Melbourne, community gardens provide an important resource. More information is available at http://www.portphillip.vic.gov.au/community_gardens.html.
