What do we mean by community leadership?
This component of the Community Plan outlines how Council can support, value and increase the number of people active in the community. In this context, community leadership embraces the concept of 'active citizens', people who have the vision, capacity, personal values and interest and willingness to contribute to their community alongside the belief that our 'community leaders' are fundamental to the community's capacity to work together.
Community leadership in our city
Our community leadership program consists of a series of events and forums around local and global issues. The program aims to provide opportunities for participants to gain knowledge of a range of social and environmental issues, network across the broader community, partner and collaborate successfully, and have fun and build relationships.

Does Australia need a Human Rights Act?
There are differing opinions within legal and political circles and the broader community about whether human rights are adequately protected in Australia. A key aspect of the debate is whether Australia needs a national Human Rights Act similar to the Charter of Human Rights and Responsibilities implemented by the Victorian Government in 2006. On October 20th Julian Burnside QC and Mirko Bagaric debated this important public policy issue at the St Kilda Town Hall. By the end of the evening there were 114 audience votes for a national human rights act and 16 votes against a national human rights act.
A six-part audio recording of the evening is available to download below.
