Applying for Australian CitizenshipIf you are considering applying for Australian Citizenship, you can obtain an application pack from the Department of Immigration by downloading one from the website: www.citizenship.gov.au or by calling the Citizenship Hotline on 13 18 80. You can also use eServices to request an application form or pick up one in person from reception at all Town Halls. If you prefer phone ASSIST on (03) 9209 6777 or TTy (03) 9209 6713 and ask for the Project Manager ISEPICH. Your application must be lodged with the Department of Immigration. New citizenship test submissionThe Department of Immigration and Multicultural Affairs (DIMA) recently ran a public consultation process regarding the proposal for a formal citizenship test. Cabinet has now approved the introduction of legislation to provide for a citizenship test for all new applicants for Australian citizenship.Changes to the test will include testing about "Australian values" and stricter assessment of English language. Formalising the test will also mean that people can fail the test. Given the City of Port Phillip's proud history of welcoming new citizens, refugees and asylum seekers, the council made a submission on the subject to the Department of Immigration and Multicultural Affairs. The submission directly addressed the questions set out in the DIMA discussion paper which included:
