New citizenship test submission

The Department of Immigration and Multicultural Affairs (DIMA) recently ran a public consultation process regarding the proposal for a formal citizenship test. Cabinet has now approved the introduction of legislation to provide for a citizenship test for all new applicants for Australian citizenship.Changes to the test will include testing about "Australian values" and stricter assessment of English language. Formalising the test will also mean that people can fail the test.

Given the City of Port Phillip's proud history of welcoming new citizens, refugees and asylum seekers, the council  made a submission on the subject to the Department of Immigration and Multicultural Affairs.

The submission directly addressed the questions set out in the DIMA discussion paper which included:

  1. Should Australia introduce a formal citizenship test?
  2. How important is knowledge of Australia for Australian citizenship?
  3. What level of English is required to participate as an Australian citizen?
  4. How important is a demonstrated commitment to Australia's way of life and values for those intending to settle permanently in Australia/ or spend a significant period of time in Australia?

For further information about the introduction of the new Citizenship Test please see the New Citizenship Test general questions on the DIMA website.
