Council-Managed Children's Centres
The councils' children's centres provide care and eductaion for children ages six weeks to six years and a range of care options.
A Centralised Waiting List now operates for all Council-Managed Children's Centres. Children can now be registered once for all of the five Council Managed Centres. Please call Children's Services on 9209 6360 to register on the centralised waiting list. For further information go to How to Apply for Childcare and Kindergarten.
Service Philosophy
Port Phillip Children's Centres believe Council, staff and parents work in cooperation to provide a safe, caring, stimulating and happy environment that recognises and promotes each child's individuality.
Our aims are to:
- Create an environment where the diversity of cultures and values of all families, children and staff are recognised and respected.
- Provide a learning environment that encourages the development of individual children, maximising opportunities to develop to their full potential and become valuable members of society.
- Maintain a consultative process between management, staff and parents.
- Promote staff training to ensure that the centre philosophy and goals are reflected in the centres daily operation.

Family Information Booklet
To help parents or carers using the council's children's centres to get the best and most out of the service, a Family Information booklet has just been published, covering a wide range of parent and children's interests.
The booklet is packed with information about attendance, accidents and emergencies, health, illness, nutrition and more.

Occasional care
Southport Playhouse
Southport Occasional Care is a non-profit, parent run community Child Care Centre Cooperative located at the Port Melbourne Family and Children's Hub, on the grounds of the Port Melbourne Primary School, in Graham Street, Port Melbourne.
Southport offer childcare for toddlers on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday mornings, from 9.30 to 12midday. On Thursdays they offer a 3yr old group from 9.30 to 2.30.
To access the service, it is necessary to become a member, and take an active part in the organisation (eg - roster duty, working bees, social activities and fundraising).

Playgroups
What is a playgroup? Playgroups provide parents and caregivers with the opportunity to meet new people, gain support and exchange parenting ideas. They allow babies, toddlers and preschoolers to socialise as they play and learn together. All playgroups are different but the emphasis is on fun and friendship. The council's Family and Children's Services Community Support Officer can assist with:
- Locating and joining a playgroup.
- Starting a new playgroup.
- Links with other support agencies.
- Early childhood resources.

New Playgroups Established Port Melbourne Rostered Playgroup Wednesdays 10am - 12pm Port Melbourne Family & Children's Hub Children aged between 2 - 6 year olds.
