What is car sharing?

Car sharing is a neat scheme giving members access to cars on-demand for rent by the hour or by the day. The rental cost covers all expenses, including petrol, insurance, registration and maintenance. People who drive less that 15,000 km per year will probably find car sharing will save them money

Need wheels?

Don't buy a car - share a car with your neighbours! The City of Port Phillip is now home to nine 'car-share' vehicles, which are available for you to drive. Starting with three cars in St Kilda, you can now find cars in St Kilda, East St Kilda, Elwood and South Melbourne, with plans for them to become available throughout all our local neighbourhoods. Self-service, on-demand - rent by the hour or day. Petrol, insurance, cleaning, maintenance and registration are all included.

Car-share members have access to cars on-demand for rent by the hour or the day. If you drive less that 15,000 km per year you'll probably find car sharing will save you money. And no parking hassles when you're done!

How does it work?

For a small joining fee and fully refundable deposit, local residents and businesses can join one or both of the two council-supported car share scheme. Members book a car online or by phone. The car is parked in its dedicated bay, where it is left at the end of a trip. Petrol, insurance, cleaning, maintenance and registration are all included in the hire charge. Members then receive a bill for their usage.

There are currently two companies offering car-share in our city, with Flexicar providing eleven cars and GoGet providing three cars. Visit their websites or call them for information about their services.

Why does the council support this?

In developing the Parking Plan (Towards 2010) in 2000, Port Phillip residents directed the council to investigate alternatives transport choices for the local community” (Strategy 6.7), and to specifically “explore the possibility of introducing car hire schemes for neighbourhoods”.

How is the council involved?

The City of Port Phillip provides nine conveniently located on-street parking bays in St Kilda, Elwood, East St Kilda and South Melbourne

The parking bays are dedicated for the use of Flexicar and GoGet's cars. The council's Sustainable Transport Unit is helping to promote car sharing as an alternative transport choice for locals.
