Planning for the future
The City of Port Phillip is developing a structure plan for Bay Street and its surrounding areas. The plan will influence future changes in land use, the design of new buildings and public spaces, traffic, parking, safety and how people get to, and move around the area by foot, bike, public transport or car. In November we asked the Port Melbourne community what they liked and disliked about Bay Street and its surrounds to ensure this is reflected in the future directions for the area.
What you said
What you value and like: the mix of shops; the community and village ‘feel’; convenience and accessibility of the centre; its location close to beach and city; and the wide and open streetscapes. What you dislike: the traffic speed and traffic noise including trucks; the intersection of Bay and Liardet Street; there is not enough parking; limited variety and mix of shops; and a lack of landscaping in streets. Click here for a summary of what you told us.
Your feedback has assisted us in developing the strategic directions and priorities which will guide the development of the Structure Plan. The emerging draft strategic directions for the Bay Street Activity Centre are:
- Extend the business mix and integration of land use activities in Bay Street, with an emphasis on local convenience and shopping for the Port Melbourne community.
- Facilitate remaining opportunities for housing growth within the activity centre whilst protecting the heritage, low-rise character and amenity of surrounding established residential areas.
- Strengthen Bay Streets ‘sense of place’ and its role as a local civic and community ‘hub’.
- Maintain and reinforce the distinct and contrasting urban character of different precincts to form a sequence of urban experiences across the activity centre. (This will involve retaining different built form characteristics, for example, traditional, low-scale, heritage character north of Graham Street and new contemporary higher rise south of Graham Street).
- Enhance the connectivity, cohesion and identity of Bay Street through ensuring the (public streets and spaces) and continuous ‘active’ edges (through land uses and building design) act as integrating elements.
- Strengthen the physical visual and activity connections between Bay Street, and the foreshore and Station Pier.
- Enhance the amenity, safety and function of the activity centre through reducing the impact of traffic.
- Facilitate the evolution of the activity centre as an ecologically sustainable precinct which achieves a progressive reduction in local energy consumption.
