Daisy stands proud outside Luna Park.

Pets are more than just cute. They can also be good for you!

The council knows the value of having a pet for our health and wellbeing. Pet companionship helps alleviate loneliness and provides a non-threatening way of socialising with people.

Working with local community organisations, the council has sought to understand more about the value of pets as companions within our community. Community members of all ages and backgrounds have been interviewed about their relationships with their pets (including dogs, cats, fish, birds and snakes).

Some of the benefits identified through the interviews (as well as other research) include:

  • improved general health such as reduced blood pressure and cholesterol levels
  • healthier life style
  • emotional well being from increased feelings of being needed, accepted and loved
  • increased opportunities to meet people and form friendships
  • increased feelings of safety and self worth
  • promotes emotional bonding and learning responsibilities within families
  • increases relaxation and decreases stress when used in therapeutic settings

The City of Port Phillip is interested in gaining a better understanding of the health and well being benefits of interaction between humans and animals.
